"This is not just an election, this is war," said Jaganmohan Reddy while addressing a gathering during his campaign today. And he seems to have guaged the situation well this time. The Kadapa and the Pulivendula by-elections are nothing short of a war of power and prestige for the YSR Congress Party and the Congress, who have been pitted against each other for quite some time now.
This election will either make or break Jagan's political career, and he must win over Dr. D L Ravindra Reddy of the Congress pary and M V Mysoora Reddy of the TDP, in order to prove his worth. Jagan's YSR Congress Party has been hogging media space since its formation, and the party has set pretty high expectations for itself.
Still trying to capitalise on the sympathy card more than a year of her husband's death is Y S Vijayalakshmi, YSR Congress Party's candidate for the Pulivendula constituency. Her major opponents would be her brother-in-law Y S Vivekananda Reddy of the Congress party and Ravindranath Reddy Mareddi of the TDP.
The Congress party is also taking keen interest in the Kadapa and Pulivendula by-elections, and a meeting that included former Chief Minister Rosaiah and other major party leaders was convened this morning. The members of the Congress were directed to make a cumulative effort in order clinch the Lok Sabha seats in both constituencies. The Congress leaders expressed confidence that their party would win the by-elections.
Though the showdown seems to be between the YSR Congress Party and the Congress, N Chandrababu Naidu is also gearing up to put up a good fight for the elections. The president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has announced that he will embark on an extensive election campaign in 3 districts from 24th to 26th of April, and during the first week of May.
With the three major parties of AP preparing to lock horns over the Kadapa seat, the region's Superintendent of Police (SP) has declared that security has been beefed up, and warned that the police would not hesitate to fire at the public if the pollings take a violent turn. He also stated that all campaigning events should end by 10:00pm every evening.
