TRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Friday announced that former MLA Kusukuntla Prabhakar Reddy would be the party's candidate for the Munugodu by-election.
The CM reportedly took this decision after taking into consideration survey reports and the opinions of local leaders, activists, the district party leadership and the people of the constituency.
Reddy has been a TRS activist since the party's inception, and had worked actively during the agitation for a separate Telangana State.
In 2014, he was elected as the Munugodu MLA with a margin of 38,055 votes. In the next Assembly election held in 2018, he again contested for the seat, but couldn't retain it. He was defeated by Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy by a margin of 22,552 votes.
Rajagopal Reddy is contesting on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party now, and Congress has fielded a woman, Palvai Sravanthi, as its candidate. She is a daughter of Palvai Govardhan Reddy, a five-term MLA of the Munugodu constituency.
The CPI and CPM have already announced their support to the TRS.
Meanwhile, the nomination process for the by-election began today. The last date for filing nominations is October 14, and for withdrawal is October 17. The by-election will be held on November 3.
