Several parts of the capital city experienced thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning on Sunday afternoon.
Areas including Uppal, Kapra, Malkajgiri, L B Nagar and Secunderabad experienced moderate rainfall, and those including Amberpet, Kachiguda, Nallakunta, Nagole, Mansoorabad, Malkajgiri and Turkayanjal received rains accompanied by gusty winds. Power supply was disrupted due to strong winds in the L B Nagar, Vanasthalipuram, Hayatnagar and Peddaamberpet Abdullapurmet areas.
In Vanasthalipuram, strong winds uprooted huge trees at the Ganesh temple premises on the main road of NGOs Colony and at the park near Rythu Bazaar. GHMC staff rushed to the spot and removed the trees that had fallen on the road.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre said that low-altitude winds were likely to prevail in the west and north-west directions. The depression which started over southeast Rajasthan on Saturday and reached Telangana via Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha at an altitude of 0.9 km above sea level, had weakened on Sunday, due to which strong winds blew in the State capital resulting in the rains, it said. The southwest monsoon had advanced to some parts of southwest and north-east Bay of Bengal, the Met office added. There was a possibility of some dry weather in the State for the next three days, and indications that the temperatures during the day would gradually rise by two to three degrees, it said.
