The toll plazas in the state today witnessed a huge swell in vehicular traffic, ahead of Sankranti.
Large numbers of people from Andhra Pradesh residing in Hyderabad were leaving the state capital to return to their homes to celebrate the harvest festival with their families, resulting in the sharp spike in the number of vehicles at various toll plazas, including the Keesara toll plaza, on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway. This, despite the fact that most vehicles now have fast-tags.
In order to deal with the congestion, the authorities have initiated various measures to regulate the traffic at all the toll plazas.
Meanwhile, the commuters travelling on the route appealed to the concerned authorities to cancel the toll fee for the duration of the festive season.
While the Hyderabad-Vijayawada stretch witnesses the passage of 3,000-4,000 vehicles on average per day, the number goes up to 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles during Sankranti and other festivals.
