Heeding the call for a "Million March" against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a few thousand anti-CAA protestors, almost all Muslims, congregated at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park today.
The gathering was peaceful, with most of them just carrying the national flag and/or placards.
The movement of people to the place however caused many traffic jams in the area around it for several hours.
The protest stood out for the fact that no major political party was behind it. A small Muslim organization named Tehreek Muslim Shabban called for it, and the police gave permission for only 1,000 people to attend it. However, the Congress and Left parties supported it, and a large number of people landed up - mostly from the Old City, which wore a deserted look at the same time.
Political leaders Shabbir Ali, V Hanumantha Rao (both Congress) and Amjadullah Khan (MBT) spoke at the event.
Most of the sloganeering was against the CAA and the NRC/NPR, though quite a bit of it also was against Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
