A large number of people participated in a rally against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Registry of Citizens in Kamareddy on Friday.
The rally started from Madina Masjid after the Friday prayers. People from all religious communities, leaders and activists of the Congress and Left parties, NGOs and other socio-religious organizations participated in the rally.
Holding placards demanding that the BJP government withdraw the CAA and drop its plans for a National Register of Citizens (NRC), they shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing them of trying to create divisions among the people on religious lines.
The protestors walked up to 3 km and submitted a memorandum to the district Collector.
Describing the rally as historic, senior Congress leader and former minister Shabbir Ali said that such a huge gathering had not been witnessed on any public issue in Kamareddy.
He said that unemployment was at its peak, and people, especially in the unorganized sector, had been facing financial crises. The people wanted jobs and growth opportunities right now, and not communal politics of the kind being pursued by the Modi government, he claimed.
Shabbir Ali reiterated
his demand that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao convene a special session of the Assembly to pass a resolution rejecting both the CAA and the NRC.
