Senior Citizen Attempts Suicide

Victim of bureaucratic red tape, he had bought land for daughters' marriage but govt claimed it.
Hyderabad | 9th August 2010
Failure to get justice in a land dispute case has led to a 66-year-old man attempting suicide in front of the Hyderabad Collector's Office on Monday.

According to details coming in, B Krishna, an Old Bowenpally resident, had bought a plot of 400 sq yards, situated beside Sai Santosh Apartments, falling in Survey No 57/2 near Trimulgherry, 14 years ago, and had got it registered in his name.

Krishna was left confounded when the Cantonment officials claimed ownership of the land. The state government, too, claimed that it was the owner, 9 years ago. The land was allotted to the Andhra Pradesh Cooperative Society at that time.

Krishna filed a writ in the state High Court challenging the claims. The High Court judged that the dispute was unfounded and that it was a private land.

Sai Santosh Apartments also falls under Survey No 57/2. The apartment builders managed to get the documents cleared with NOC and by the MRO, and then proceeded to build the complex.

After getting the High Court order, Krishna approached the MRO, the Collector and the RDO for regularisation of his plot, but was dejected as the officials made him go from one office to the other, saying that they were not the the competent authority.

After making rounds of the government offices for 7 years, Krishna became more and more dejected.

Being unemployed since the last 15 years, and having a paralysed wife to take care of, Krishna was forced to take the extreme step of attempting suicide.

Passersby shifted him to the Osmania General Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment in Ward No. 107.

When INN approached him, Krishna revealed that he has 5 daughters, 2 of whom are married and 3 meet household expenses by taking tuitions to schoolchildren. He said that he had bought the land for Rs. 12 lakh, with the hope that he could sell it off to meet his daughters' marriage expenses.
