Debunking reports of child kidnapping gangs in Hyderabad, Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar urged the citizens not to believe in the rumours spreading on WhatsApp groups.
Kumar conducted a review meeting on Sunday in view of the attacks on innocent people being considered as kidnappers thanks to the rumours.
Later, speaking to the media, Kumar said that some mischievous people were posting in Whatsapp kidnapping incidents that took place in other countries and portraying them as having taken place in Hyderabad. He asked the people to send such WhatsApp videos to the department and not to anyone else.
Reckless and naive forwarding of such videos was resulting in deaths of innocent people in lynching by misled mobs. For example, he said that one person had died and another's condition was serious in the attack on hijras at Chandrayanagutta on Saturday.
He said that the police department was pressing in additional staff to patrol in the nights.
South Zone DCP Satyanarayana warned that cases would be filed on persons who took the law into their hands.
For the uninitiated, a hijra died and two others were injured severely in an attack yesterday at Baba Nagar of Chandrayanagutta on people suspected as child kidnappers.
