The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation seems to have woken up to the fact that the encroachments of footpaths, and in some cases, roads, has contributed to the slow pace of vehicular movement and frequent traffic jams.
The situation, particularly noticeable in the major trunk routes of the city, not only results in traffic snarls, but also causes inconvenience to pedestrians.
The municipal authorities on Friday announced the decision to conduct a special drive to remove the encroachments from road margins / foot paths.
The special drive would clear encroachments on 15 major roads. The special drive would be launched from July 24 and will continue till July 29.
On July 24, encroachments on the road between Khairatabad Junction to Erragadda would be cleared, while authorities would focus on the road leading from Liberty X Roads to Narayanguda on July 26.
The road leading from YMCA Junction to Taj Hotel via King Koti would see the GHMC authorities at work on July 27, and the Koti Centre road on July 28. The NMDC Junction (Masab Tank) to Rethibowli road would be cleared of encroachments on July 29.
All these roads are in the Central zone.
The West zone of the GHMC limits would see the road from "Y" Junction Kukatpally to JNTU Kukatpally be attended to on July 24 while the JNTU Junction to Raintree Park Junction road would see the GHMC staff at work on July 26. The Miyapur Junction to BHEL Junction road will be the focus of the GHMC’s attention on July 27.
In the North Zone, the IICT Junction Tarnaka to Mettuguda Junction would be cleared of encroachments on July 24. The Secunderabad Station Area would be cleared on July 26.
The South Zone would see the GHMC staff working to clear the Chaderghat Bridge to Dilsukhnagar road on July 26. The Chandrayangutta to Phisalbanda road will be attended to on July 27 while the IS Sadan to Santosh Nagar road will be cleared on July 29.
The East zone will see the Dilsukhnagar to LB Nagar Junction road being cleared on July 24, while encroachments on the IICT Junction Tarnaka to Uppal Junction road will be cleared on July 26.
This encroachment removal drive shall be taken up in coordination with the traffic police. It is being undertaken as per the directions of the state high court as well as the Lokayukta.
In addition to this, special drives will also be taken up by GHMC for removal of parking violations in all buildings where sanctions have been given for provision of parking spaces. Special notices will be issued to these occupiers/owners of the buildings who have converted parking spaces to other usages.
Further, demolitions will be taken up in line with the directions of the high court and Lokayukta wherever it is noticed that the parking spaces are insufficient. Such owners/occupiers will be issued special notices either to provide parking or to provide alternate space for parking within a reasonable period of time, failing to do which will result in sealing of the premises under HMC Act and Public Health Act.
Sick dying in the way to hospitals and pregnant women giving births on the way to maternity homes. This is due to traffic congestions caused by encroachments on road.
GHMC should implement the order of Judiciary in South Zone also. The following roads are like life lines. and should be cleared from encroachments in the present drive against encroachments.

PRESS RELEASE 30/07/2011
Drive against encroachments should continue
We all should appreciate support and co-operate with GHMC etc to implement Hon’ble High Court Orders to remove encroachments from footpaths. Pavements/footpaths are not accessible to children as they are occupied by traders. Children and public forced to walk on the road and risk their lives. Now with the help of Hon’ble Judiciary authorities should “liberate” the footpaths from the clutches of traders. Encroachments on roads and footpaths should be classified as “crime against humanity” and should be non-bail able crime. Encroachments on the road in fact are encroachments in our nation’s development. This is not just the question of illegal employment of few inviduals, but human sufferings of millions of people.

"GHMC has woken up to the need to remove encroachments...." so says the report. Woken up? My foot! That too GHMC? Don't make me laugh. After the so-called DRIVE, I find today, i.e., on 13-9-2010 that the position on Erramanzil-Erragadda streach remains exactly as it was before the drive! If the officials of GHMC are worth their salt, let them remove the private building encroaching 70 % of the road-width (yes, 70%!) and another green coloured structure on the opposite side of the same stretch which is similarly blocking the road (and which is extending at the rate of 3 feet per year) on the Satyam talkies road in Ameerpeta which is a stone's throw from CM's residence.
