In an attempt to smoothen vehicular traffic, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) today started clearing encroachments on and along footpaths in Hyderabad.
The officials of the GHMC town-planning wing commenced a drive to remove encroachments and cleared 140 makeshift shops on footpaths in the Sheikhpet area on Thursday night.
The officials, with the help of police personnel, conducted the drive in Tolichowki, Kukatpalli, Nampally-Darulsalam, Uppal, L B Nagar and other areas.
After removing the illegal structures, the officers imposed penalties ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 10,000 as per GHMC Act for those who illegally encroach public spaces.
