Senior police officials were on Wednesday taken to task by Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy for their 'intelligence failure' in the
firing incident at Sompeta in Srikakulam district earlier in the day.
According to Secretariat sources, Sabita told the senior officials in no uncertain terms that she was disappointed by the lack of intelligence inputs from the region.
She is reported to have told the police officials that the strong public sentiment against the power project should have been reported to concerned officials.
The Home Minister is also believed to have told the police officials to back down for the time being and try to assuage the anger of the residents of Sompeta.
At least 2 protestors were reported dead and 2 others injured in police firing at protestors who tried to stop the foundation laying ceremony of the 2,000 MW project of the Nagarjuna Construction Company.
Violence had broken out during the protest when the company's security personnel tried to stop the protestors.
The protestors then indulged in stone pelting, leading to the police firing.
