Describing the
police firing at Sompeta in Srikakulam districts as "immensely distressing", Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said that his party condemns the incident in the strongest possible terms.
Talking to media persons at his residence, Naidu demanded that an inquiry be ordered into the events which led to the death of 2 protestors. He said that the people in the area are living in panic that they would be deprived of their livelihood.
The TDP chief also said that the government must announce suitable ex-gratia for the victims and free treatment for those injured in the violence.
Naidu criticised the reported statement of Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasad Rao in which he allegedly said that the power project would come up in the area.
Accusing the government of negligence, Naidu said that such incidents are caused if the administration ignores the legitimate demands of the people. He said that the people are forced to violent protests if their voice is not heard by the powers-that-be.
The TDP chief said that he would visit the spot on Thursday to find out the reason behind the violence for himself, and also to console the families of those affected.
