The Hyderabad High Court on Monday granted a six-week stay on the citizenship cancellation of TRS MLA Chennamaneni Ramesh.
The MLA had sought a stay on the Central government's decision cancelling his citizenship claiming he had filed a revision petition with the Home Department which was pending disposal.
It may be recalled that the Centre recently cancelled his Indian citizenship following a report submitted by the S K Tandon Judicial Committee stating that the MLA for the Vemulawada Assembly constituency had obtained Indian citizenship by submitting fake documents.
The committee also claimed that Chennamaneni continues to be a German citizen.
Chennamaneni filed a review petition in the High Court challenging the order of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The State Ministry of Home Affairs, Telangana Home Secretary and Rajanna Siricilla District Collector were made respondents in the petition.
Chennamaneni claimed that he had obtained his Indian citizenship after returning from Germany as per Section 5(1) of The Citizenship Act. He also found fault with the Home Ministry, stating that Indian citizenship could be cancelled only in cases of anti-national activity.
