Senior Congress leader and former MP V Hanumantha Rao announced today that a Backward Classes (BC) census would be conducted across Telangana from October 28 to November 13.
Speaking to the media, Rao said that officials would visit villages and mandals to collect data, and urged the people to cooperate by providing the necessary information during the census.
"The census will reveal the numbers of the various BC communities, just as there is similar data for SC and ST communities. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has initiated this BC census, which was earlier supported by leaders like Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi," he said.
Rao emphasized that the census would benefit BC students studying in prestigious institutions like IITs and IIMs, and would open up more opportunities for BC representation in panchayat and mayoral elections.
Criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rao said, "Despite being in power for ten years, Modi has not conducted a BC census. Rahul Gandhi is the only leader who has consistently advocated for this, and it will help ensure justice for backward communities."
Rao also said that the Congress government had decided to hold local body and panchayat elections only after the completion of the census.
