BRS working president K T Rama Rao today accused the Congress government in Telangana of deceiving the backward classes by failing to introduce a bill ensuring 42% reservations, as it had promised in its Kamareddy BC Declaration meeting.
He alleged that the government merely made an announcement without taking any real legislative action.
"A mere statement cannot be called historic. We expected the government to bring a legally binding bill ensuring 42% reservations for BCs. Instead, they issued a statement and are calling it historic. The BCs will never accept this deception," KTR said.
He said that BC communities across the State had anticipated that the special legislative session would formalize the promised 42% reservations in local body elections. However, the government had failed to take any concrete steps, he lamented.
KTR claimed that the Samagra Kutumba Survey conducted by the previous government held authentic data on social categories. He said that a total of 1.03 crore families and 3.68 crore people had participated in that survey, with BCs comprising 51% of the participants - rising to 61% when BC Muslims were included. (He also recalled that Revanth Reddy had urged the people not to provide their details in that survey, despite which it held far more relevant data.)
He asked how the BC population had allegedly dropped to 46% in the current survey, and accused the Congress government of manipulating statistics.
He also highlighted that even a Congress MLC had called for the burning of the current official survey report, raising concerns about its transparency.
He accused the Congress of misleading the public with false promises regarding BC reservations and the BC Sub-Plan which was expected to bring tangible benefits to BC communities, and said that BC organizations across Telangana were demanding accountability from the government.
