Welcoming the Union government's decision to incorporate a caste census in the forthcoming national census, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy today proposed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi set a timeline for the completion of the census.
During a press conference at his residence, the Chief Minister recommended that the Centre engage in discussions with all political parties regarding the policies that should guide the caste census. He suggested forming a committee of Central ministers as well as an expert committee of officials for this purpose.
"Before initiating the census process, the Union government should clearly outline the terms of reference and make them publicly accessible. It is also crucial to consult with all political parties to gather their inputs. In order to conduct the census effectively, contributions from all stakeholders, including civil societies and intellectuals, should also be considered," Reddy said.
The Chief Minister said that Telangana was leading the way among all States and had served as a model for the nation in implementing the caste census. He said that the State government was eager to share its experiences with the Union government and provide recommendations for effective execution of the caste census.
In response to remarks from Telangana's BJP leaders, who had criticised the caste census initiative by the Telangana government, the CM asked why BJP-led States had not carried out caste censuses during their decade in power.
He accused the BJP leaders of attacking the Telangana government for political advantage, driven by jealousy and frustration.
"Until recently, BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were against the call for a caste census. However, facing political pressure and no other alternatives, the BJP-led government at the Centre has now opted to carry out a caste census," Reddy added.
