"In spite of being bitten by mosquitoes, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation staff is sleeping peacefully, since they themselves are the root cause of the Jambagh area in Mozam Jahi Market becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes," said TDP Floor Leader in the GHMC Singireddy Srinivas Reddy on Saturday.
Srinivas Reddy made the comment while undertaking an inspection tour in the Central Zone of the GHMC.
He was accompanied by the floor leaders of all other parties in the GHMC, along with Deputy Mayor Jaffer Hussain.
The TDP leader's sarcastic comment came when he saw stagnant water on the potholed stretch of road between Putlibowli and Mozzam Jahi market.
The road has more potholes than tarmac, with some of the pools of stagnant water knee-deep, and around 3 feet in diameter.
Deputy Mayor Jaffer Hussain was visibly angered at the sight of the road and lashed out at the accompanying GHMC officials by demanding to know if they would act only after some commuter dies.
Executive Engineer Chenna Reddy told the Deputy Mayor that the GHMC had already sanctioned Rs. 15.5 lakh to repair the road, but the police department had stopped workers from carrying out the patchwork.
This statement angered the floor Leaders, prompting Jaffer Hussain to direct Chief Engineer R Dhan Singh to immediately talk to the higher officials of the police department and start work from Monday and complete it within a week.
The team also inspected the Darusshifa to Chaderghat road where they saw huge mounds of garbage, seemingly unattended from the past few days. The condition of the road at Kali Khabar, an exit point for buses from the Imbliban Bus Depot also shocked the inspection team.
The team also inspected roads in front of the state Assembly, Lakdikapul, Haj House, Basheer Bagh.
The team also visited the MRR Hot Mix plant where 400 cubic feet of tarmac is prepared to fill potholes on the road.
Jaffer Hussain said that the floor leaders would conduct an inspection tour every month. Congress floor leader Kaleru Venkatesh, MIM floor leader Mirza Mustafa Baig, TDP floor leader Singireddy Srinivas Reddy and BJP floor leader Baddam Prakash, along with higher officials of the GHMC Engineering Department, were part of the inspection team.
