MIM Survives TRS Headwind In GHMC; Rest Washed Out

The All-India Majlis-Itthehadul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) has protected its strongholds despite the TRS wave in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, in which the Congress and the BJP-TDP combine, the main Opposition parties in Telangana, were washed away.

The MIM won not only in the Old City but also in some places in the rest of the city.

The Party won 44 seats and stood second. In the last elections, the MIM had won 43 seats and stood third.

In the campaigning for the GHMC elections, the TDP, BJP, Congress and TRS had targeted the MIM and heaped blistering allegations upon it. And on election day, the MIM leaders even physically attacked the Congress, TRS, BJP and TDP leaders in Old City in different incidents. But the MIM does not seem to have gotten affected by any of the negativity, and managed to retain its hold over the Old City by winning almost all over its bastion, showing how the Old City votes. Also, the Owaisi brothers participated in the election campaign in an extremely hands-on manner, encouraging and invigorating the cadre.

In the last elections, the MIM had shared the Mayor post with the Congress, which had won 53 seats and stood in the first place. For the first three years, the then Tarnaka division corporator Banda Karthika Reddy was Mayor, and later, MIM Mehdipatnam corporator Majid Hussain was Mayor. The TDP, which won 45 seats in the last GHMC elections, acted as the main Opposition party.

The MIM, which had played kingmaker where the Mayor post was concerned every time in the past, may not get an important role in the GHMC this time as the TRS with 99 divisions is very close to the magic number of votes (106), and will grab the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts easily with its ex-officio members.
