The Congress has secured the mayoral position in Nizamabad with the support of the AIMIM.
Kuragayala Uma Rani was elected as Mayor, and Salma Tahseen assumed the role of Deputy Mayor.
The elections were held after the swearing-in of the corporators.
The BJP had won 28 seats in the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation in the recent municipal elections. The Congress secured 17 seats, AIMIM won 14 and the BRS one. A total of 31 votes was required to win the mayoral post. The BJP thus fell three seats short of the majority mark.
Senior Congress leaders adopted strategic measures, allying with the AIMIM and also secured the support of the lone BRS corporator, who joined the Congress, to win the Mayorship.
Reacting to the development, MP and senior BJP leader Dharmapuri Arvind accused the opposition parties of unethically collaborating to outmanoeuvre the BJP in the Nizamabad corporation, and alleged that the police, perceived to be aligned with the Congress, contributed to the BJP's defeat. He pledged to reverse the outcome before the end of the current five-year term, and also said that the BJP had achieved a moral victory in the municipal election.
For good measure, he also added: "Now I understood why BRS president K Chandrashekar Rao and working president K T Rama Rao are being protected by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy in the Kaleshwaram, Formula-E and other corruption cases."
