In a landmark move, the Telangana government is set to launch the distribution of free 'sanna biyyam' (fine rice) to the BPL families across the State, starting on Ugadi, March 30.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will inaugurate the scheme at a public meeting in Huzurnagar, the constituency represented by Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy.
The launch event will include the distribution of the rice to the locals, with Statewide distribution through fair price shops commencing on April 1.
The government has ensured that adequate stocks of fine rice are available to meet the demand for at least four months.
Under this initiative, each individual listed on a white ration card will receive six kg of fine rice per month through the Public Distribution System (PDS).
The program aims to benefit approximately 3.2 crore people, accounting for about 84% of the State's population.
The decision to replace the previously distributed coarse rice with fine rice addresses past issues where beneficiaries often did not consume the lower-quality grain, leading to its misuse and diversion. By providing high-quality rice, the government seeks to ensure that public resources are utilised effectively and that the nutritional needs of the poor are met with dignity.
To support this initiative the government has procured fine variety paddy from farmers offering a Rs 500 bonus per quintal above the minimum support price (MSP). This strategy reportedly not only ensures ample stock for distribution but also encourages farmers to cultivate fine rice varieties, benefiting the agricultural sector, too.
