A Hyderabad court today pronounced guilty eight persons of a "snake" gang involved in a gang-rape and other crimes.
The gang used to terrorize people using snakes, leading to its name.
After going through the case, a Rangareddy court found eight accused guilty, and said that the quantum of punishment would be announced tomorrow.
The court rejected the charges against a ninth accused due to lack of evidence.
The snake gang had created a scare among the people a couple of years back. It was reported that the gang members gatecrashed a farmhouse on the city outskirts on July 31, 2014, and gang-raped a girl in front of her boyfriend. The accused were arrested by the Cyberabad police after a massive operation in the Old City, in which 400 policemen participated.
After a thorough probe, the police filed chargesheets against nine accused and filed cases against them under multiple sections of the IPC. The investigation revealed that the gang was involved in several crimes including extortion, and was also settling disputes.
The accused who were found guilty in the case include Faisal Dayani, Khadar Barakab, Tayyab Baslam, Md Parvez, Ali Barakab and Salam Hundi. Of the eight accused seven are in the Cherapalli jail and two others are out on bail.
