It seems like the city is reeling under a bout of stringent alcohol-policing. What with the CM and the TRS demanding for the closure of ilicit arrack shops (belt shops) in the state, and the ban on the popular "ladies nights" in clubs, the latest instance of people facing the ire of the authorities, for the use of alcohol, is the fact that different courts have convicted as many as 60 people for driving in inebriated condition, in the last week.
While the Third Metropolitan Magistrate B Chengalaraya Nayudu sentenced 58 people to three days imprisonment each, for drunken driving, Second Metropolitan Magistrate Secunderabad Hari Narayana sentenced two people to two days imprisonment each.
This series of law-enforcement-against-drunk-driving processes was carried out over the last weekend, i. e., on May 24 and 25. A total of 347 cases were booked against drunk drivers.
The vehicles of all the respondents were detained, and the haul includes 263 two-wheelers, 11 three-wheelers and 70 four-wheelers.
The drivers attended the compulsory counselling sessions at TTI, Begumpet, and Goshamahal on Monday. The respondents were produced before the Second Metropolitan Magistrate Court and fines between Rs 2,000 to 2,100 were imposed on them. (INN)
