The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) today carried out a special drive to detect the illegal sale of anabolic-androgenic steroids and cardiac stimulants including Mephentermine Sulphate injections being supplied to gym-goers for bodybuilding.
Surprise inspections were conducted at 20 gyms across Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Malakpet, Punjagutta, Narsingi, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Kothapet, Kukatpally and Suraram, in coordination with local police authorities.
Some gyms were found to be illegally selling Mephentermine Sulphate injections to their customers for performance enhancement in competitive sports or fitness training.
Mephentermine Sulphate is a cardiac stimulant meant for medical use under a doctor's supervision, and is reportedly being misused in many gyms to enhance endurance and performance in bodybuilding.
The DCA officials said that the abuse of anabolic-androgenic steroids posed significant health risks. These drugs, often misused by bodybuilders to enhance muscle growth, could cause serious side effects, including cardiovascular problems, liver damage, mood swings and hormonal imbalances, they said.
Misuse of these substances could also lead to infertility, kidney failure and psychiatric disorders, they said.
The officials urged gym managements to refrain from the illegal stocking or sale of prescription drugs. Gym owners and staff found violating the law would face strict action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, which carried penalties including imprisonment of up to five years, they said.
