Demanding the resignation of Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran following the allegations of payoffs in the 2G Spectrum allocation, Communist Party of India general secretary A B Bardhan on Monday expressed solidarity to the fight against corruption launched by various civil rights groups.
Though he did not take the names of civil activist Anna Hazare and yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Bardhan's support to the groups fighting against corruption is sure to raise many an eyebrow, riding on the back of allegations as it is that Baba Ramdev is backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, a party which the Left has often described as communal.
Bardhan told media persons at Maqdoom Bhavan that the Left parties have time and again raised the issue of corruption and black money, and that hence he was supporting the fight launched by the civil rights activist and the yoga guru.
The veteran Left leader also demanded that the Congress-led UPA government reveal all the details about the 2G spectrum allocation scam as lakhs of rupees of public money is involved.
Bardhan further stated that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has no moral right to continue with Maran in the Union Cabinet till his name is cleared.
He also lent support to calls that the Prime Minister's Office and the Judiciary be brought under the ambit of the Lok Pal Bill.
Bardhan demanded that the Panel constituted to discuss the Lok Pal Bill take the suggestions of the Opposition parties before finalizing the Bill.
The CPI leader accused the Centre of having ruined the lives of Girijans and tribals by giving their lands to POSCO. Stating that the Left parties had opposed the acquisition of land in Nandigram, he alleged that the government had planned to hand over 4,000 acres of land to POSCO without any agreement.
He added that the government had registered cases against Prathirodh Samiti leader Abhay Sahu just because he took up the cause of fighting against POSCO. Bardhan demanded that the government amend laws for the acquisition of lands for industries. (INN)
