CPI national secretary K Narayana today urged the Andhra Pradesh government to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged scam involving corporate giant Gautam Adani in the State and bring the culprits to justice.
A bribery case has been filed against Adani in a New York court alleging that Adani paid about Rs 2,100 in bribes to Indian government officials, including Rs 1,750 crore just to the then AP CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and accomplices.
Narayana claimed the Adani scam epitomized the nexus between political and economic corruption. "The case filed in the US is having reverberations across India, but the loudest are in Andhra Pradesh. It is the Andhra Pradesh people who will bear the brunt of the higher-priced power resulting from Adani's bribing the then-CM," he said.
Narayana also criticized PM Modi, suggesting that his reputation would improve if he refrained from interfering in the case (Adani is widely seen as quite close to Modi). "It would be inappropriate for either the US government or PM Modi to suppress this corruption case. And widespread public movement is essential to expedite its resolution," he said.
