Communist Party Of India (Marxist) state secretary B V Raghavulu, on Tuesday, demanded that the state government stop the
release of water from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam to the Krishna delta for kharif operations.
In a letter written to chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, Raghavulu alleged that the state government has taken a unilateral decision to release the water to the Krishna delta, disregarding the drinking water needs of Nalgonda district.
He also said that the government's decision is widening the rift between the Seemandhra and Telangana regions.
"Despite the water levels in Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar touching rock-bottom, how can the government release water to the Krishna delta, violating the interests of one region," he asked.
In the letter, Raghavulu demanded that chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy convene an all-party meeting to discuss the water position in the Nagarjuna Sagar project, and withdraw his orders.
The CPI (M) leader threatened to intensify his agitation against the government if it goes ahead with the release of water to the Krishna delta. (INN)
