Tension prevailed when policemen from Andhra Pradesh allegedly barged on to the Nagarjuna Sagar dam and set up fencing at the 13th gate claiming that that part belonged to their State.
After midnight on Wednesday, about 700 policemen of the APSP barged on to the dam through the left main gates on the side of the right bank and reportedly clashed with the personnel of the TSSF who were guarding the dam. Some Telangana policemen were injured in the incident.
The AP policemen took the dam up to the 13th gate into their control and set up fencing at the gate, claiming that half of the 26 gates of the project would come under their purview.
The AP policemen also damaged the CCTV cameras set up at the gate.
The TSSF personnel reported the matter to the higher officials. Upon receiving the information, Miryalaguda DSP Venkatagiri reached the dam and spoke with the AP police. He explained that the irrigation department would look after the maintenance of dam, and advised the AP police to remove the fencing. However, with the AP police not responding to the plea, the DSP went back with his staff.
As part of united AP's bifurcation, the management of the Nagarjuna Sagar project was handed over to the Telangana government by the Krishna River Management Board, and so far the Telangana government has taken all the measures related to water release and safety.
The AP police had made a similar effort to barge on to the dam on February 13, 2015, but the Greyhounds teams of the Telangana police were rushed to the spot and there was a clash at that time.
