The ongoing works to lay water, drainage lines and underground power cables in the Old City under the Jawarlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) have been set a deadline to be finished before August 31, 2010.
The works, sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 200 crore, will cover 82 km of the Old City's roads, and are being undertaken by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and the Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company (APCPDC).
The roads which had been dug up were patched by the contractors after the lines were laid. The rains destroyed the patchwork and the filling of the dug-up roads has sunk into the ground, leaving these roads un-passable.
At a meeting that was attended by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi and GHMC Commissioner Sameer Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director of APCDCL T Krishna Babu, HMWSSB Managing Director Jagdeshwar Rao and other senior officials of all the 3 departments, and contractors who had been overseeing the works, were warned to complete the restoration works on these badly-affected roads before August 31.
