In an effort to address the persistent issues of sewage overflow and waterlogging in Hyderabad's Yakutpura area, GHMC Commissioner K Ilambarthi today mandated a comprehensive survey of the region's stormwater drains.
Accompanied by local MLA Jafar Hussain and the area's corporators, the Commissioner conducted an on-site inspection of several drains this morning.
The inspection covered critical areas including Rangeli Kidiki, Hussain Koti, Maula Ka Chilla, Ganga Nagar and Rain Bazar.
At Rangeli Kidiki street, the team observed significant sewage overflow. Due to the street's historical significance dating back to the Nizam's era, Ilambarthi directed project engineering officers to perform a detailed survey of the existing sewage nala, and asked for a thorough report.
During the visit to the Ganga Nagar nala at Maula Ka Chilla, MLA Jafar Hussain said that ongoing nala works had remained incomplete for over three years. In response, the Commissioner instructed the responsible agency to expedite these projects.
Residents voiced concerns about garbage accumulation in the nalas leading to waterlogging in their homes. The Commissioner promptly ordered the Zonal Commissioner to address these issues to alleviate the residents' hardships.
At Rain Bazar, locals reported that inadequate drainage infrastructure resulted in rainwater stagnation, causing flooding in their homes. MLA Hussain informed the Commissioner of a proposal to construct a box drain at an estimated cost of Rs 1.60 crore. Ilambarthi recommended initiating this construction promptly, ensuring minimal inconvenience to the public.
The Commissioner also proposed the development of a master plan for the city's stormwater drainage system, akin to the existing Road Development Plan. He also said that projects were underway under the Strategic Nala Development Plan (SNDP) to prevent hardships for residents, particularly in the city's older sections, and urged officials to complete these initiatives before the onset of the next monsoon season.
