The Congress members staged a walkout from the Telangana Legislative Council on Thursday over the farmers' suicides issue.
The Leader of the Opposition Mohammed Ali Shabbir said that the State government had failed to give a specific date or an assurance on the clearing of the remaining part of the promised crop loan waiver.
Stating that the government had also failed to announce a deadline to provide relief to farmers from private financiers, Shabbir Ali announced his party's walkout from the House.
Shabbir Ali expressed dissatisfaction with the reply given by Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas to the debate in the Assembly on the farmers' problems on Thursday, and said that the government had failed to provide either long-term or short-term solutions to the agrarian crisis.
The government did not even react to the Congress party's demand for holding a special Assembly session on farmers' suicides, he said, adding that this session was convened after six months only to complete the Constitutional obligation and not due to its love for farmers.
He also asked the government to convene a meeting with the State Level Bankers' Committee and direct bankers not to harass farmers.
The government should also pursue the Centre to get the best MSP for farmers and take steps to get crop insurance for all farmers, he said.
Welcoming the enhancement of compensation to Rs. 6 lakhs with effect from June 2, 2014, Shabbir Ali said that all cases of suicides needed to be re-investigated.
He also wanted the NRI Cell to be revived as it could help farmers and their families in North Telangana.
He also stressed the need to clear the dues of sugarcane farmers from Nizams Sugar Factory, and for black jaggery to be purchased through Markfed.
