Following its strained relationship with MIM, the Congress party is now gearing up to give its former ally a tough fight for the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat during the upcoming elections.
Rahul Gandhi's emissary Amar Kale, who is on a state visit, held a series of meetings with Congress leaders at Gandhi Bhavan on Tuesday to discuss the prospects of winning the Hyderabad seat. According to sources, Kale discussed the possibilities of fielding a strong candidate in the next elections against MIM. Those who participated in the discussion include Rajya Sabha MP M A Khan; Secunderabad MP Anjan Kumar Yadav; MLCs M S Prabhakar, Indirasena Reddy and Shabbir Ahmed; nominated MLA Christian Lazarus; former Mayor Banda Kartika Reddy; Deputy Mayor G Rajkumar; PCC General Secretary Abed Rasool Khan; Mohd Sirajuddin; Yousuf Qureshi and others, including GHMC Corporators.
Talking to reporters later, Abed Rasool Khan said that he had advised Kale to declare the Hyderabad candidate right now so that the candidate could prepare well for the next elections. He also demanded that Muslim candidates be given tickets from Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and one each from all three regions, besides tickets to Muslims from 20 Assembly constituencies.
Mohd Sirajuddin demanded that leaders from the Old City be given importance if the party wishes to strengthen its base in Hyderabad seat.
MLC M S Prabhakar expressed confidence that party's relationship with the MIM might be restored. However, he said, the party should field a strong candidate from Hyderabad. (INN)
