The Congress on Monday scoffed at the 'student-friendly' posture adopted by the BJP state unit president G Kishen Reddy, and questioned the party's commitment to student welfare.
The party said Kishen Reddy was taking up the fast with an eye on the forthcoming by-polls.
Talking to media persons, Technical Education Minister Mopidevi Venkatramana Rao and Higher Education Minister D Sridhar Babu questioned what the BJP-led NDA government had done for the sake of students during its reign.
The 2 ministers urged students to recall the days of the NDA regime and to consider that the BJP-led government had not announced even a single scheme for student welfare.
They said that the government has already released Rs. 500 crore towards the fee reimbursement and said that the students will start receiving the money from the second instalment of Rs. 1,000 crore
The ministers said that the government had already promised to release the final instalment by August 15.
They questioned the legitimacy of the various leaders' fast on the 'non-issue', and said that these fasts were being taken up only with an eye on the forthcoming by-elections in the Telangana region.
