Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced that the State government would constitute a committee, headed by a sitting judge of the High Court, to study the implementation of the 12% reservation each proposed for the Muslims and the STs in Telangana, on Friday.
Speaking in the State Legislative Assembly in Hyderabad, KCR admitted that there were lots of apprehensions regarding the implementation of the proposed 12% reservation each, for Muslims and for STs. However, he said that the TRS government would implement its promise at any cost.
He said that Telangana would adopt the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka model to implement the reservation.
Describing Telangana as a weaker-section State, the Chief Minister said that it was legally possible to surpass the 50% ceiling on reservation.
Citing the example of Tamil Nadu, he said that the State had been giving almost 69% reservation to different castes. An Act had been passed by the State Legislature, and the Centre had been forced to make a constitutional amendment.
He said that if Tamil Nadu had been permitted to cross the 50% ceiling on reservation, then the Centre would have to permit Telangana to do the same.
KCR said that an all-party delegation would be taken to New Delhi to press for the demand.
He said that he hoped Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who himself belonged to the Backward Classes, would facilitate a constitutional amendment that would enable the Telangana government to implement the promise of reservation. (INN)
