Stating that winning as many seats as possible for the Congress in the 2014 general elections is his top priority, Rajya Sabha member K Chiranjeevi, on Wednesday, said that he had made important recommendations to Congress president Sonia Gandhi over the strengthening of the party in AP.
Talking to media persons after submitting a report on the recent by-elections in the state to Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her residence at 10 Janpath, Chiranjeevi said that he had discussed with Sonia Gandhi the reasons for the Congress' failure, and also on how to gear up for the 2014 general elections.
He said that Sonia Gandhi has recommended certain steps to strengthen the party in the state.
Chiranjeevi expressed confidence that the Congress would win the "maximum number of seats" in the 2014 elections if the Sonia's recommendations are implemented at the ground level.
About the AP by-polls, Chiranjeevi said that he had never claimed that the Congress had won in Ramachandrapuram and Narasapuram due to his popularity. Alleging that the media misquoted his statements in this regard, he said that the Congress won in these segments due to the coordination and sustained efforts of all leaders.
The Rajya Sabha member said that the YSR Congress won the by-elections because of sympathy votes following Jagan's arrest.
As for the question about his possible leadership role in the party, Chiranjeevi said there would be no change in the Congress' leadership, and that the Congress high command would take a final decision in this regard.
"Whatever the high command directs me to do, I will accept it," he said, "I am ready ro work as ordinary worker of the Congress even if the high command does not give me a Central minister's post,” he said.
Stating that the Telangana issue had not figured in his talks with Sonia, he said that the high command would take a decision on Telangana statehood at an appropriate time.
Minister for Infrastructure And Investments Ganta Srinivasa Rao was also present in the meeting with Sonia Gandhi. (INN)
