Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu today expressed deep anguish over the death of Muni Kama Koti, a Congress worker who immolated himself on Saturday aggrieved over the Centre not offering Special Status to AP.
Koti, of Manchalaveedhi in Tirupati, took the drastic step during an agitation by the Congress demanding that the Centre accord Special Status to the residuary state.
He suffered 95% burns and was rushed to hospital on Saturday, and passed away on Sunday.
Naidu extended condolences to the family members of Koti. Stating that their families and the society needed them, the Chief Minister made an appeal to the people of the state not to resort to any such drastic steps.
"I'm confident that the Centre will grant Special Status to our state. And it is my sincere request to the people not to be driven by emotion or resort to any extreme steps," Naidu said.
Reiterating that injustice was meted out to residual Andhra Pradesh, Naidu said that he would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Special Status in Delhi soon, and exert continuous pressure on the Centre for Special Status.
"It is the responsibility of BJP government to fulfill the promises made during the UPA regime by the then Prime Minister Manomhan Singh," he said.
Naidu added that efforts were being made to overcome the current problems by getting funds from the Centre for the construction of the capital city and the Polavaram project.
