Telugu Desam Party president and former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh N Chandrababu Naidu was on Friday arrested by the Maharashtra police.
According to reports reaching here from Mumbai, the TDP chief, along with 5 of his party's MPs and 7 MLAs, was arrested on charges of 'violating prohibitory orders', in Nanded district.
The Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil informed the state Assembly about the arrest. Patil had earlier in the day
told the legislators that the government would not hesitate to arrest the TDP chief.
Naidu, along with his party MLAs and leaders of the Lok Satta Party, had set off on a bus yatra to the site of the Babli Irrigation Project in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra.
The TDP chief had said that the yatra was aimed at highlighting the plight of farmers from Andhra Pradesh whose lands would turn arid if the Babli project was allowed to be completed.
He had said that he was not afraid of the warnings issued by the Maharashtra government.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had tried to stop the bus yatra by asking Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah to talk to Mr and dissuade him from embarking on the tour.
