In a major development, the Centre today allotted a further 26,387 houses for Telangana to provide shelter to the poor in the State.
According to informed sources, the Centre has taken a decision to give these houses in addition to the 57,664 houses already allotted to Telangana. With this, the total number of the houses allotted to Telangana rises to 84,051 houses.
The Centre also sanctioned Rs 342 crores towards the construction of these houses.
After its sister state Andhra Pradesh was allotted some 1.96 lakh houses, Telangana worked hard to get more houses allotted under the Central scheme. The state government's efforts are said to have fructified after Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya also exerted pressure on the Centre.
