Sanathnagar BRS MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav today strongly condemned the GHMC's decision to rename Annapurna canteens after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Many BRS corporators, led by the MLA, staged a protest at the GHMC office opposing the move.
Speaking on the occasion, Talasani said, "Many people come to the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. We launched the Annapurna Canteen scheme under the leadership of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to provide full meals to the needy. It is now being reported that the Congress government plans to change the name of these canteens. If there is such an intention, a GHMC council meeting should be convened, and a decision taken based on a majority vote."
Talasani also warned the Congress that if the decision to rename the canteens was not withdrawn, the BRS would launch a large-scale agitation.
"The Congress is free to name its six guarantees as it wishes, with no objection from the BRS. However, changing the name of the Annapurna Canteens is not appropriate. We continued the name of former CM Y S Rajasekhar Reddy when we maintained the Arogyasri scheme. When we say Annapurna, we think of Ammavaru (the goddess). If the State government insists on changing the name, we demand a proper discussion and voting in the Council," he said.
Referring to the inauguration of the PJR flyover and the Congress allegedly taking credit for the same, he said, "It was our government that built it. It has become a habit for the Congress to take undue credit."
