BJP Slams TRS For Failure To Address Farmer Suicides
Due to the negligence of the TRS government, over 1,000 farmers had committed suicides in the past year, Telangana BJP president Kishan Reddy alleged.
Hyderabad | 5th September 2015
Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy today alleged that there was an agricultural crisis in the State, as the TRS government was not addressing the farmers' issues.
Speaking to the media, Reddy demanded that the State government immediately take measures to mitigate the problems of the farmers who were committing suicides unable to bear the debt burden.
Due to the negligent attitude of the TRS government, over 1,000 farmers had committed suicides, he alleged. However, the government, instead of resolving the issue, was resorting to fudging the numbers by claiming that only 409 farmers had killed themselves, he said.
During the last three days itself, 23 debt-ridden farmers had committed suicides in the State, Reddy added.
He said that the highest number of farmers had committed suicides in the Medak district, the native district of KCR.
The BJP would organize a "Rythu Deeksha" in Nizamabad on September 7 and in Hyderabad on September 8, he said.
Demanding that a high-level committee go into the problems of the farmers and study the drought situation, he said that the government should evolve a strategy to meet the needs of the farmers in the drought-affected areas.
Referring to the postponement of union minister Nitin Gadkari's visit to Telangana, Reddy alleged that the State government was trying to prevent the visits of union ministers to the State.
He said that Chief Minister KCR had informed the Centre that he was busy and would be unable to accompany the union minister who was to lay the foundation for a highway between Yadadri and Warangal costing Rs 1,900 crores.
In view of the State government's letter, the visit of Gadkari had been postponed, and the ceremony was also kept pending, Reddy informed.
He asked KCR whether this was his strategy in view of the upcoming Warangal by-elections.
