Leaders from all political parties today urged Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma to endorse the Bill proposing 42% reservation for Backward Classes in local body elections.
During a meeting at the Raj Bhavan, they pressed for its immediate approval.
The delegation included TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Seethakka, Government Whips Adi Srinivas and Birla Ilaiah, BRS MLA K P Vivekananda Goud, CPI leader Narayana and MLC Nellikanti Satyam.
The leaders informed the Governor about the recent passage of the Panchayati Raj Act 2018 Amendment Bill in the Assembly, which removed the earlier 50% reservation cap and raised the quota for BCs in local bodies in Telangana. They also said that the Bill was unanimously approved by the Assembly.
The Governor, in turn, sought details about the BC population in the State.
After the meeting, TPCC chief and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud told the media that the State government was committed to implementing 42% BC reservation in local body elections.
He said that the enhanced BC reservation was based on the caste census survey, which showed that BCs constituted 56.33% of Telangana's population. He added that leaders from all parties urged the Governor to consider the survey findings and give his assent to the Bill.
