BJP senior leader Bandaru Dattatreya is likely to be appointed Governor of a state after the reshuffle of the Narendra Modi cabinet on Sunday.
According to informed sources, Dattatreya who has resigned from his union minister post will be one of the contenders for a Governor position as the union government will need to fill Governor posts that will turn vacant soon.
The central leadership is reported to have sought the resignation of Dattatreya, known as a people's man, as he was unlikely to be able to give a tough fight to the TRS in the state due to his age, but keeping his seniority and sincerity to the party in mind, is considering giving him a gubernatorial appointment. However, this is not likely to be done immediately but just before the 2019 polls to avoid a by-election for the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat which he represents.
Dattatreya was the lone BJP representative in the Narendra Modi government from Telangana.
Sources said BJP national general secretary Muralidhar Rao and advisor to Water Resources Ministry Vedire Sriram Reddy may be inducted into the Modi cabinet as both Telugu-speaking states will have no representation in the Union cabinet once Dattatreya and Ashok Gajapathi Raju go. Both Rao and Reddy belong to Telangana.
The sources also said that BJP MP and senior leader from Andhra Pradesh Haribabu's name was also doing rounds for a union cabinet berth.
