Raghavulu Launches Hunger Strike
CPI (M) state secretary B V Raghavulu has launched an indefinite hunger strike, to pressure the state govt to redress the problems of poor and backward class people.
Communist Party of India (M) state secretary B V Raghavulu on Thursday stated that the government failure in addressing the problems of the people will cost it dearly.
Talking to mediapersons after launching his indefinite hunger strike at Indira Park, the CPI (M) leader stated that the fast was aimed at mounting pressure on the state government to redress the problems of poor and backward class people, and many public issues concerning the state.
Raghavulu said that some of the important demands raised by him include legal backing for and implementation of a nodal agency system for the SC/ST sub-plan, reduction of property tax in various towns and cities, resurvey of forest lands for distribution to tribals, and cancellation of mining licences to private steel companies.
The Left party leader said that he would continue the fast until the government solves the problems of the poor.
Raghavulu said that he was forced to intensify his agitation after the government did not make efforts to address the problems of the people. He pointed out that he had submitted a list of 44 demands to the state government but had got no response.
The veteran Communist leader pointed out that the repeated adjournments and protests inside the state Assembly meant that there was hardly any chance of the problems being addressed inside the House either.
Neither the political parties nor people's organisations were keen on taking them up, he pointed out.
The CPM leader said that apart from his hunger fast, his party would also organise a 'Chalo Hyderabad' with the urban poor and members of the SC/ST community, on March 22.
The objective of the twin programmes was to mount pressure on the government to take up a debate in the Assembly on the demands raised by the CPM.
Speaking to the media persons on the occasion, CPM senior leader Mallu Swarajyam stated that there was no vedika in the state to address the problems of the people.
Former MP M Babu Rao and state secretariat members S Veeraiah and G Nagaiah were also present.
