CPM Telangana secretary Thammineni Veerabhadram today demanded that the State government conduct a fresh inquiry into the death of the "dalit" student of the University Of Hyderabad, Rohith Vemula.
Veerabhadram alleged that the police had submitted a false report to benefit BJP leaders in the case.
He said that Vemula had committed suicide eight years ago after being harassed, mentally tortured and discriminated against by some BJP leaders and the then UoH Vice-Chancellor Podile Appa Rao. He said that the Telangana State committee of the CPI (M) was of the view that the State police's hasty submission of a false report to the High Court, before the district Collector announced his decision on Vemula's caste, was intended to enable the dropping of the cases against the BJP leaders and the UoH Vice-Chancellor, who were the accused in his death case.
He also said that the CPI (M) welcomed the State DGP's announcement that the case was being re-examined, after the High Court's announcement earlier that the case would be closed on the basis of the police report.
"I am happy that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has assured Rohith Vemula's mother that he would ensure justice for Rohith's family. The CPI(M) has appealed to the State government to conduct a thorough inquiry and punish the culprits severely, and ensure that such incidents do not recur in any university," he added.
