Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today demanded the arrest of those who were allegedly responsible for the suicide of UoH student Rohith Vemula.
Kejriwal, who visited UoH and expressed solidarity with the agitating students demanding justice, strongly condemned the remarks of Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, who he said was trying to make this look like it had nothing to do with the victim being a dalit.
"It is a shame for the nation that Rohith, who got admission to the university on the basis of his merit and not via reservation, committed suicide due to discrimination meted out by the University authorities for his being a dalit," Kejriwal said.
The suspension of five dalit students happened after Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya wrote to the HRD ministry terming the situation in the university as "casteist and anti-national", Kejriwal said, and held Dattatreya responsible for Vemula's suicide. He demanded the removal of Dattatreya and HRD minister Smriti Irani from the Union cabinet.
Earlier, AAP leaders Ashish Khetan and Ashish Talwar visited the university on Thursday to meet the protesting students there.
