A tragic road accident that took place near Summadevipeta village of Palasa mandal, in Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam, today claimed the lives of four police personnel, including a sub-inspector and three police constables of the armed reserve wing.
The victims have been identified as sub-inspector K Krushnudu, head constables Y Babu Rao and P Antony, and driver P Janardhana Rao. They were on their way back from Byrisarangapuram after handing over a dead body.
Reports say that the four were driving in a Bolero along Srikakulam's NH 16 when a lorry hit their vehicle after the front tyre of their SUV reportedly burst near Summadevipeta causing it (the SUV) to spin out of control.
(The vehicle had rammed into the divider on the road and keeled over onto the other side of the divider. That is when the lorry had collided with the SUV.)
All four occupants of the car died on the spot due to the impact of the collision.
After news of the incident broke, several higher ups of the police department reached the spot and took up rescue operations. A case has been registered regarding the incident and an investigation is underway.
The frequency of road mishaps across the two Telugu states has been raising concerns about road safety for some time now. Just some days ago, an unfortunate car accident in Telangana's capital city
claimed the lives of two engineering students when the car in which they were travelling hit an electric pole.
