Andhra Pradesh has registered its first case of the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19.
The state Medical and Health Department made an official announcement to this effect.
It said that the Omicron variant had infected a 34-year-old person from Vizianagaram district of the state.
It also said that the person had come to the state from Ireland on November 27, 2021, via Mumbai and Visakhapatnam.
The department said that it had performed tests on the person at the Vizag airport, and found that he was infected with the variant after his samples were sent to the CCMB.
The government also said that the person had not displayed any symptoms of Covid-19.
With this case, the total number of Omicron infections has now reached 37 in the country, it is reported.
Maharashtra has registered the highest number (17 cases) of cases. Following this, the Maharashtra government has imposed Section 144 of the CrPC for two days in the entire state.
