S Rajasadaram, Legislature Secretary and returning officer for the Rajya Sabha elections in the state, formally declared all the 6 candidates who filed their nominations as elected unopposed, on Monday.
Union Minister of State for Environment Jairam Ramesh, former chief minister Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy, senior leader V Hanumantha Rao and former bureaucrat JD Seelam from the Congress, and industrialist Y Sujana Chowdhary and Gundu Sudharani from the Telugu Desam Party were declared elected to the Upper House of Parliament from the state.
The nominations were found to be in order after scrutiny on Saturday, and the candidates being declared elected was a foregone conclusion.
This is the first time that Telugu Desam Party members were being elected, while the Congress had re-nominated its 4 candidates.
Talking to media persons after the elections, TDP nominees G Sudharani and Sujana Chowdary said that their nominations were proof that party president N Chandrababu Naidu is following the precedent set by former chief minister and party founder N T Rama Rao. They praised the party for nominating those who have worked for the party at the grass-roots level.
Sudharani said that she will thank the party president with folded hands for giving an opportunity to a common party worker. Chowdhary said that he would work round-the-clock to fulfil the responsibility he has been entrusted with and live up to people's expectations.
