AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi today faced a bitter experience at the Gannavaram airport when TDP cadre staged a protest carrying black flags and raised slogans demanding that he not to step into Andhra Pradesh.
Gandhi arrived here to participate in a "Special Status Bharosa" meeting held at Guntur's Andhra Muslim College. Congress leaders Raghuveera Reddy, Digvijaya Singh, K V P Ramachandra Rao and others welcomed Gandhi at the airport. TDP activists however were less than welcoming, and apart from showing him the flags, also staged a rasta roko at the Kesarapally national highway, and raised slogans "Rahul Go Back" everywhere.
The TDP activists alleged that the Congress leaders, who were responsible for the division of the united state, had no right to step into Andhra Pradesh.
Gandhi went to Guntur in a rally after a brief meeting with the Vijayawada party leaders. The police deployed huge forces from the Gannavaram airport to Ramavarappadu to avert any unfortunate events.
Uttar Pradesh former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, JDU leader Sharad Yadav, CPI national general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, CPM leader D Raja and several Congress leaders attended the Guntur meeting.
