Fearing punishment by their parents, 2 intermediate girl students attempted suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train at Kamalapuram Railway Station in YSR district (Kadapa), early on Sunday.
According to Inspector Umamaheshwar Reddy, the 2 girls, Rathi Devi and Swetha, jumped before the speeding train after they were apprehensive of punishment by their parents. The girls, who stayed at government girls hostel and were studying in Intermediate 1st year, had skipped college.
The parents of the girls, however, had visited the college, and had found the girls bunking classes. This information was conveyed to the girls by their classmates.
Umamaheshwar Reddy revealed that the suicide attempt resulted in the hands of one of the girls being crushed by the speeding train, while the other girl also received serious injuries. He stated that the girls were thrown off the tracks and survived.
The girls were noticed by railway staff, and were rushed to hospital where they are presently undergoing treatment.
Railway police have registered a case and taken up further investigations.
