5 members of a family were killed when the roof of their century-old house caved due to the incessant rains at Karivena village, Atmakur mandal in Kurnool district, between the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.
According to Sub-Inspector Suresh Kumar Reddy, the house in which Irkineni Nagalaskmi Reddy (36) and his family lived was about 100 years old. Along with Reddy, his second wife Lakshmi (21), his 2 children from his first wife Rajender (8) and Chandana (6), and one daughter from his second wife, Lokeshwari (2) were also killed.
Suresh Kumar Reddy said that the house collapsed after the walls had become weak due to the incessant rains which the district has been witnessing since the past few days.
Neighbours noticed the debris early Tuesday morning, when they ventured out to buy milk. The police were duly informed, and rescue efforts initiated.
The bodies were shifted to hospital for autopsies after rescue workers managed to retrieve them from under the debris.
